The saga started with the fur traders who travelled up the 'River Highway'. The surrounding land opened up to them, and then the railroad provided a new highway to the west. The steel rails with the help of their builders, The Gandy Dancers, brought a flood of settlers who became dependent on the railway for survival. This is Lillian Ross's sixth historical novel and is a sequel to Mewassin: The Good Land. The characters are not fictional, this being their story, It is based on the memoirs of the Lenny, Ross and Perrault families who pioneered Alberta.
